How do I set up my encryption for our wireless signal

I am using a macbook using o/s 10.4. I tried to follow the set up wizzard. It seems like I follow the instructions correctly, but once I advance I can no longer connect with my network. I see the name I changed it to, and the computer sees it, but when I enter the new password when prompted it gives me the message "unable to connect to port (what ever I name my network). Can someone help me?...
